The Church of the Intercession on the Nerl (Pokrov on Nerli) — the white stone temple in the Vladimir region Russia, in one and a half kilometers from Bogolyubov, an outstanding monument of architecture of the vladimiro-Suzdal school.
Dating of the temple according to N. N. Voronin — 1165, based on the message of Life of Andrey Bogolyubsky is traditional that the church of the Cover was constructed in memory of the lost son of the grand duke Izyaslav Andreevich.
The church is consecrated in honor of a holiday of the Cover of the Virgin established in Russia in the middle of the XII century at the initiative of Andrey Bogolyubsky. Possibly, it is the first church of the Cover in Russia.
On the legend containing in Andrey Bogolyubsky's Life, the white stone for construction of church was taken out from the Bulgar kingdom subdued by Andrey Bogolyubsky. However this legend is disproved by both historic facts, and results of paleographic analyses of the white stone used for construction of church.
Walls of church are decorated with carved reliefs. The central figure in composition of three facades of the temple — the tsar David-psalmopevets sitting on a throne with psalteriy in the left hand, dvuperstno blessing with the right hand. In registration lions, birds and women's masks are used.
Initial internal lists of the temple are completely lost (are brought down at a ponovleniye in 1877).
Refinement of proportions and the general harmony of the temple is noted by many researchers; often the church of the Cover is called the most beautiful Russian temple.
"The Church of the Intercession on the Nerl near Vladimir is not only the most perfect temple created in Russia, but also one of the greatest monuments of world art …" - I. E. Grabar
